ARC - the Association of Revenue and Customs - has recently submitted evidence to the Treasury Select Committee's inquiry into the administration and effectiveness of HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).
The union's evidence reviews the department's organisational aims and strategy, and suggests that it has missed an opportunity to improve staff engagement. ARC also re-iterates the arguments made in its Being Bold campaign, which stressed the need for investment in tax professionals to increase tax yield, rather than cuts being made to HMRC's budget.
ARC's campaign was widely supported and endorsed by the TUC's Congress in the autumn, which passed an FDA motion on HMRC resources and the deficit.
The select committee's inquiry is looking at the implications of HMRC's Comprehensive Spending Review settlement and whether the department is able to deliver the Government's aims on tax compliance. It will also include questioning whether PAYE reform is necessary and what HMRC's priorities should be for the future.
