FDA delegates at the 2012 TUC LGBT Conference: Ro Marsh, FDA equality officer; Managers in Partnership (MiP) national officer George Shepherd; Roland Zollner, Executive Committee member and chair of the FDA Equality and Diversity Committee; and MiP member June Leitch.
An FDA delegation of four attended the TUC Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans (LGBT) Conference on 5 and 6 July, held at Congress House in central London. The theme of this year's conference was 'Against austerity, for solidarity'.
Conference debated motions from affiliates (for more read the TUC LGBT Conference 2012 final agenda), and heard from speakers including the outgoing TUC General Secretary, Brendan Barber, who told delegates that he had been at the very first TUC LGBT Conference in 1998.
Other speakers included Haneen Maikey from Palestinian LGBT organisation al-Qaws, who told delegates what it was like being out and gay in Israel and Palestine; Linda Bellos, an equality campaigner who expressed concern at Government attacks on the Equality Act; and Michael Cashman MEP, who was the founding chair of Stonewall and who believes that Europe and the European Union is helping defend LGBT rights. An informal plenary session on the subject of decriminalising homosexuality also took place, including speakers from South Africa, India and St Lucia.
