An FDA Black History Month event was held at lunchtime today, with the theme of 'Celebrating trade unionism - the black contribution'. Black History Month is celebrated every October in Britain, to help raise awareness of BME issues whilst celebrating the achievements of people from BME backgrounds.
The guest speaker was Jennette Arnold, deputy chair of the London Assembly. She spoke about those who had inspired her, including the late Lord David Pitt, the longest-serving black Parliamentarian. A film was also shown about the work of Jayaben Desai during the 1976-1978 strike at the Grunwick film processing factory.
A booklet was handed out at the event, including individual profiles written by BME trade union members. To read the booklet, please click on the following link: Voices - stories from trade union members.
