Today is International Women's Day. Commemorated worldwide on 8 March each year, this day marks the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future and is a national holiday in some countries.
To celebrate International Women's Day, the FDA held an evening drinks reception for women members on Tuesday 2 March, at the Marriott Hotel at County Hall in central London. At the reception, chair of the Diversity and Equalities Sub-Committee Sue Gethin gave a little background information on International Women's Day and also announced the launch of the Women into Leadership seminar, aimed at those women in the civil service who feel they are up against the 'glass ceiling', whether just below or at the first level of the SCS. The event, to be held on 23 September 2010, is being run jointly by the FDA and Westminster Explained and is supported by the Cabinet Office.
Ro Marsh, FDA national officer with responsibility for equality and diversity, said: "We are delighted to have been able to host this reception, for which thanks go to the FDA Union Learn project. It was great to see so many women members and guests getting together informally to mark International Women's Day."
