On Monday 7 December FDA attended the third Civil Service Live event of 2009, which took place in Manchester. Civil Service Live was launched in April 2008 by Sir Gus O'Donnell and the National School of Government to provide civil servants with an opportunity to share information, attend workshops and seminars and listen to speakers such as Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The Manchester event - Civil Service Live North West - was attended by more than 2,000 delegates and speakers included cabinet secretary Sir Gus O'Donnell and First Civil Service Commissioner Janet Paraskeva. The FDA had a stand at the event, which was overseen by FDA staff and reps who provided information about the union and encouraged delegates to join. FDA organiser Sacha Dutta said: "The FDA team spoke to at least 400 delegates, helping to raise the profile of the union. We also had a number of people join FDA on the spot, and lots of people took information away with them."
