The FDA today welcomed the announcement that the mandatory retirement age of 65 is to be abolished for the Senior Civil Service from March 2010.
This follows the announcement last year that the mandatory retirement age for staff below the SCS would be removed. FDA had been pressing the Cabinet Office to review the position for the SCS and this was agreed as part of the announcement in 2009.
FDA head of operations Dave Penman said "We welcome the commitment given today by Sir Gus O'Donnell. We have always said that there is no excuse for treating staff above and below the SCS differently. The changes from March 2010 ensure that civil servants of whatever grade can make meaningful decisions on retirement based on their own circumstances, rather than be forced out of employment against their will when they still have a valid contribution to make."
